Strength & Conditioning for Perimenopause and Menopause in Bozeman

Perimenopause and menopause change what your body needs from exercise. As estrogen declines, muscle mass and bone density become harder to hold onto — and the training that worked at 30 often isn’t what serves you at 50. At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, our physical therapists coach a one-on-one strength and conditioning program built for exactly this stage of life: progressive resistance work, conditioning, and balance training, dosed to your body and your history.

You don’t need any experience with lifting. You don’t need to be “in shape” first. You need a starting point that fits where you are — and a clinician who builds from there.

Why Strength Work Matters Now More Than Ever

Muscle and bone respond to one thing above all: being asked to work. Through midlife, that ask matters more, because the hormonal support that once helped maintain them is fading. Resistance training is one of the best-supported ways to hold onto strength and support bone health through this transition — and it pays off in very practical ways:

  • Muscle you keep — for hauling groceries, skiing Bridger, lifting grandkids, and everything in between.
  • Bones with a reason to stay strong — weight-bearing work gives your skeleton the signal it needs.
  • Steadier balance — strength and balance work together to keep you confident on your feet.
  • Energy and sleep — many people find regular training helps how they feel day to day.

Lifting won’t stop hot flashes — we won’t pretend otherwise. But it’s one of the most consistently worthwhile things you can do for how you feel, move, and age through this stage.

What the Program Looks Like

  1. A 60-minute evaluation — your movement, joint history, bone-health picture, and goals.
  2. A program built for you — progressive strength, conditioning, and balance work, coached 1:1.
  3. Gradual, honest progression — load builds at the pace your body earns, not a template’s schedule.
  4. A home program — so the work continues between sessions and after you’re done with us.

What We Do — and What We Don’t

We’re physical therapists, and we stay in our lane. We don’t diagnose menopause, manage symptoms medically, or advise on hormone therapy — those conversations belong with your physician, and we’re glad to work alongside whatever care you’ve chosen together. What we bring is the strength and movement side: the training your body is asking for in this stage, delivered with a clinical eye on your joints, your bones, and your history.

Who This Program Is For

  • Women in perimenopause noticing that strength, recovery, or body composition is changing.
  • Women past menopause who want to protect muscle, bone, and balance for the long run.
  • Complete beginners who want to learn to lift safely, with coaching on every rep.
  • Anyone with joint aches or an old injury that’s made gyms feel risky.
  • Active women who want their training to match what their body needs now.

Root therapy helps identify full body health and concerns after multiple surgeries. Very helpful with continued therapy after surgeons therapy focused on one part of the body. I enjoy the education and therapist and staff. Thank you

Frequently Asked Questions

What is menopause strength and conditioning at Root?
A one-on-one strength and conditioning program built and coached by a licensed physical therapist, designed around what perimenopause and menopause change in your body — muscle that’s harder to keep, bones that need more support, and energy that asks for smarter training. It starts with a 60-minute evaluation and builds from wherever you are today.
Why does strength training matter during perimenopause and menopause?
As estrogen declines, muscle mass and bone density become harder to hold onto — and resistance training is one of the best-supported ways to protect both. Strong muscles and loaded bones also mean steadier balance, easier daily life, and more confidence in staying active for the decades ahead.
Do you treat menopause or prescribe hormone therapy?
No — we don’t diagnose menopause, manage symptoms medically, or advise on hormone therapy. Those conversations belong with your physician, and we’re glad to work alongside whatever care you and your doctor choose. Our lane is the strength, conditioning, and movement side of this stage of life.
I've never lifted weights before — is this really for me?
Yes — beginners are exactly who this program was built for. We start with foundational movements and light load, coach your form one-on-one, and build gradually. Many people are surprised how quickly lifting starts to feel natural with someone guiding every session.
Is it safe to train with osteoporosis, osteopenia, or joint pain?
With clinician-led dosing, strength training is generally not only safe but one of the most helpful things you can do — that’s exactly why this program is run by physical therapists rather than a generic fitness plan. We account for your bone health, joint history, and any pain from the first session, and we coordinate with your physician when it’s appropriate.
Do I need a referral to start in Montana?
No referral is needed for most plans — Montana is a direct-access state. Medicare and Medicaid do require a referral; we help coordinate that.
Is this covered by insurance?
When the work is part of a physical therapy plan of care for a diagnosable condition — bone-density concerns, joint pain, deconditioning, recovery after injury — most major Montana plans cover it. Training that’s purely for fitness or performance is typically self-pay; we talk that through clearly before your first visit.
How is this different from a personal trainer or a gym program?
A licensed physical therapist looks at your joints, movement, bone health, and history before adding load — and adjusts session by session. That clinical eye matters most in midlife, when a generic program is more likely to flare something up than build you up.
