If your child is showing signs of Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), also known as sensory integration disorder, this can disrupt a child’s daily routines and activities. It affects how they process sensory information and react to it. Sensitivities can involve various senses, like hearing, vision, touch, smell, and taste, and more.
When there’s miscommunication in the sensory system, it can impact a child’s development and independence. Some common observations associated with SPD are if your child has trouble focusing or sitting still, moves around a lot, or gets overwhelmed by their environment. SPD may manifest itself as:
- Eating issues
- Resisting cuddling
- Delayed motor skills, such as crawling, standing, walking, or running
- Sensitivity or overreaction to stimulation, such as not liking certain noises, smells, or touches
- Seeming clumsy or awkward
- Craving rough-housing, tackling, or wrestling games
- Seeming overly distracted in the classroom or when learning new tasks
