You Deserve Better Than "Just Live With It"

Daily headaches change how you work, sleep, and show up for the people in your life. If you've been told there's nothing more to do, you've heard incomplete medicine. Most chronic headaches have a neck, muscle, or posture component — and that part is highly treatable.

Headaches 15 or more days a month Pain that starts at the base of the skull and wraps forward Tightness, pressure, or a band-like feeling around the head Headaches made worse by desk work, driving, or phone use Neck stiffness or jaw tension with the headache Medications working less well over time

Why Chronic Headaches Persist

Most chronic headaches have several drivers. Treating only one — usually with medication — leaves the others unchanged.

The Upper Neck

Stiff joints at the top of the neck share a nerve pathway with the head — irritation there can refer pain up into the head.

Tight Neck & Head Muscles

Ongoing tension in the muscles at the base of the skull, the neck, and the temples produces band-like, tension-type headaches.

Posture

Forward head posture dramatically increases the strain on your neck, feeding the input that keeps headaches going.

An Over-Sensitive Nervous System

Long-running headaches lower the brain's threshold for pain — the system gets more reactive, so triggers that didn't used to matter now do.

The Jaw

Clenching, grinding, and jaw tension share nerves with the neck and often go hand-in-hand with chronic headache.

Chronic headache means having headaches 15 or more days a month for at least three months. Most chronic headaches involve a mix — neck-driven headaches from the upper neck, tension headaches from tight muscles and a sensitized system, and migraines — and many of them respond well to skilled therapy from our physical and occupational therapists.

Chronic Headache Care in Bozeman — Treating the Drivers, Not Just the Symptoms

Chronic headache is rarely a single condition. Most people have a mix — neck-driven headaches, tension headaches, and sometimes migraines — each with different causes and each needing a different part of the treatment plan. Medication addresses some of these. Skilled therapy — from our physical and occupational therapists — addresses the rest.

At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, chronic headache care happens in full 1-on-1 sessions, with hands-on care every visit, and we work alongside your physician when medication is part of the plan.

Why Chronic Headaches Persist

The top of your neck shares a nerve pathway with your head, so stiff or irritated joints there can refer pain up into your head — often starting at the base of the skull and wrapping forward. Layered on top of that, tight muscles in the neck, the base of the skull, and the jaw produce tension-type headaches. And after months or years of headaches, the nervous system gets more sensitive, so triggers that never used to matter now set one off.

That mix is why so much headache treatment falls short — medication addresses one piece, the others carry on, and the headaches come back when it wears off. We find your specific mix and treat it.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. Comprehensive evaluation (60 minutes) — your history, a headache diary review, an upper-neck and jaw exam, and a posture check.
  2. Diagnosis — which drivers are contributing to your headaches, and what each one needs.
  3. Hands-on treatment that same visit — gentle upper-neck work and soft-tissue release.
  4. Posture and workstation tips — practical changes that lower the daily strain.
  5. Re-assessment every few visits, tracking your headache diary over time.

Take the First Step

Most chronic headaches don’t clear with one more round of the same medication. Request an appointment today — most patients are seen within the same week.

Our Treatment Approach

  • Soft-Tissue Work — Hands-on release for the tight muscles at the base of the skull, the neck, and the jaw that drive tension headaches.
  • Neck Strengthening — Rebuilding the deep support muscles of the neck that protect it from hours of desk posture.
  • Posture & Workstation Tips — Desk setup, screen height, sleep position, and phone habits that lower the daily strain.
  • Calm, Nervous-System-Aware Care — Gentle care for headaches with a stress, sensitivity, or after-concussion component.

Everyone is great! I much prefer Roots to the typical physical therapy in a big open room. All of the folks I have worked with have been great!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physical therapy actually help chronic headaches?
Yes — for neck-driven and tension headaches the evidence is strong, and even migraines respond when there’s a neck or muscle trigger. Most people with chronic daily headaches have a meaningful neck component, and easing it lowers how often and how badly the headaches strike.
How do I know if my headaches are coming from my neck?
Neck-driven headaches usually start at the base of the skull and wrap forward, often one-sided, get worse with long postures, and come with neck stiffness or tenderness. Our exam checks the upper neck and jaw to sort out where the pain is coming from.
How is your approach different from a chiropractor?
Our hands-on care includes gentle, graded joint work, soft-tissue release, neck strengthening, and posture strategy — all under one plan. We treat the muscle, strength, and posture drivers, not just the joints.
How many sessions will I need?
Many people see fewer headaches early in their care. Chronic daily headaches with several contributors take longer. We track your headache diary so the progress is clear.
Can I keep taking my headache medication during therapy?
Yes. Therapy works with your medication, and many people find they need it less as their headaches ease. We coordinate with your prescribing physician when changes seem worth considering, and we watch for medication-overuse headache, which can come from leaning on rescue medication too often.
What if my headaches are migraines?
We treat the neck and muscle triggers that often set off or worsen migraines. Many people with migraines have a real neck component that responds to therapy. See our migraine page for more. Therapy doesn’t replace migraine medication — it works alongside it.
What's the difference between neck-driven, tension, and migraine headaches?
Neck-driven headaches start in the neck and wrap forward, often one-sided, with clear position triggers. Tension headaches are on both sides, band-like, and tied to muscle tension and stress. Migraines are one-sided, throbbing, often with nausea and light or sound sensitivity. Many people have a mix.
Do I need imaging before starting therapy for chronic headache?
Usually not. A hands-on exam identifies most neck, tension, and migraine contributions. Imaging is warranted when there are warning signs — a sudden severe headache, neurological changes, fever, or a new pattern after age 50. Our exam screens for these.
Do I need a referral for headache therapy in Montana?
No — Montana is a direct-access state, so you can schedule without a referral. Some insurance plans require one for coverage; we verify at your benefits check.
