You Deserve Better Than "Just Live With It"

Fibromyalgia is real, and you deserve a provider who believes you and treats what fibromyalgia actually is — the over-sensitive nervous system behind the pain, not just the muscles.

Widespread pain on both sides of the body, above and below the waist Ongoing fatigue that rest doesn't relieve Unrefreshing sleep and morning stiffness Brain fog — trouble finding words, slowed thinking Heightened sensitivity to touch, pressure, light, sound, or temperature Headaches and irritable-bowel symptoms often alongside it Flares with stress, weather changes, or overload

Why Fibromyalgia Persists

Fibromyalgia is a whole-body condition. Treatment that addresses only one piece misses the real driver.

An Over-Sensitive Nervous System

The brain and spinal cord turn up pain signals — so normal sensation becomes painful and small inputs cause big symptoms.

Disrupted Sleep & Recovery

Unrefreshing sleep keeps the nervous system from settling its pain processing overnight.

Stress & Past Trauma

Ongoing stress and past trauma can keep the body's alarm system switched on.

A Keyed-Up Alarm System

A nervous system stuck on high alert amplifies pain, fatigue, and sensitivity.

The Deconditioning Cycle

Pain limits activity, inactivity lowers tolerance, and the cycle feeds itself unless it's carefully reversed.

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition of widespread body pain, fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog, and heightened sensitivity. It's driven by an over-sensitive nervous system that turns up pain signals — not by damage in the muscles themselves. It responds well to gentle, whole-person care that addresses the nervous system, the body, and the stress that often comes with it.

Whole-Person Fibromyalgia Care in Bozeman

Fibromyalgia is one of the most under-treated conditions in healthcare — not because it can’t be treated, but because most care addresses only one piece of it. Standard PT often hands out generic exercises that flare a sensitive nervous system. Standard medical care treats pain at the chemical level without touching the stress, sleep, and movement pieces. Neither produces lasting change for most people.

At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, we bring those pieces together under one plan: gentle hands-on care, calming an over-sensitive nervous system, carefully graded movement, and plain-language pain education — in full 1-on-1 sessions, dosed carefully for a sensitive system.

What’s Actually Happening

Fibromyalgia is driven mostly by an over-sensitive nervous system — real changes in how the brain and spinal cord process pain. The system turns the volume up: normal pressure becomes painful, ordinary activity becomes overwhelming, and it takes less and less to set off a flare. Poor sleep, ongoing stress, and past trauma all reinforce it.

The body isn’t broken — the signaling is. That’s why fibromyalgia responds to care that calms the nervous system, gently rebuilds what you can do, and addresses the stress that often comes with it — not to care that just pushes harder on the muscles.

I have been to many physical therapists for various injuries over my lifetime and this clinic is the absolute best. I feel like for the first time we are creating a plan to rehabilitate my injury but also figuring out how to avoid injuries in the future and create a strong body for my future. Tracey and Kristi both have shown me exercises I will do for life. I am so happy I chose Root.

The staff are friendly, easy to talk to and helpful. Kezia explained to me how scar tissue from surgery can keep the muscles in a tight position. Even with physical therapy the muscles will revert back to the tight position even while keeping up with physical therapy exercises. This is new to me and I can feel everything loosening up. I'm excited to see how much this can help.

Root Pediatrics has been wonderful! Their approach to PT for my 9 year old was amazing. Hannah listened well, really connected with my child, and made the PT fun. Anytime we had struggles with an exercise, she’d switch up the approach making it continually doable for my child to stay engaged and making progress. Their facility is excellent, made specifically for kids! Highly recommend!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fibromyalgia real?
Absolutely — and it’s recognized in current medical guidelines. Fibromyalgia involves real, measurable changes in how the brain and spinal cord handle pain signals. The pain is genuine. Treatment just has to address what’s actually happening in the nervous system, not only the muscles.
Can physical therapy help fibromyalgia?
Yes. The evidence supports gentle manual therapy, carefully graded exercise, plain-language pain education, and calming an over-sensitive nervous system. We combine all of these to address what’s actually driving fibromyalgia rather than just chasing sore spots.
Won't exercise make my fibromyalgia worse?
Done wrong, yes — too much too fast triggers flares and reinforces fear of moving. Done right, carefully graded exercise actually lowers fibromyalgia pain over time by turning down the nervous system’s sensitivity. We start well below your limit and build slowly. The dose matters as much as the activity.
Why hasn't anything else worked for me?
Most fibromyalgia treatment focuses on one piece — usually the muscles or medication. Fibromyalgia is driven mostly by an over-sensitive nervous system, not tissue damage, so care that ignores the nervous system often misses the real driver. Whole-person care that includes calming the system, gentle bodywork, and graded movement produces change where single approaches often haven’t.
Can therapy help if stress or past trauma are part of my fibromyalgia?
Yes — when stress, past trauma, or a nervous system stuck on high alert are part of the picture, calm, body-centered care can help settle it. It works gently with the nervous system without asking you to relive anything. We fold it into your care, and offer it on its own too — see our Somatic Experiencing page.
What makes Root's approach different?
Two things. Clinically, we combine physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nervous-system-aware care under one plan, in full 1-on-1 sessions. Practically, we offer gentle, dosed-for-sensitivity hands-on care that many clinics don’t — and we take the time to listen.
How long does fibromyalgia treatment take?
Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition, so the goal is management rather than cure. Gains in pain, sleep and energy build gradually with consistent, gently dosed care. As self-management skills develop, active therapy typically tapers to periodic check-ins. We set measurable goals at your evaluation and track them.
Will I always have flares?
Most people do, especially with stress, illness, or overload. The goal isn’t to never flare — it’s to flare less often, less intensely, and to recover quickly. We teach pacing, flare plans, and the self-management skills that make that possible.
Can you coordinate with my rheumatologist or pain management physician?
Yes — and we routinely do. Fibromyalgia often does best with coordinated care across rheumatology, pain management, primary care, and mental-health providers. Care that works across professions beats any single one alone.
Do I need a referral for fibromyalgia PT in Montana?
No — Montana is a direct-access state. Some insurance plans require a referral for coverage; we verify at your benefits check.
