Neck Pain Shouldn't Run Your Day

When turning your head, sleeping, or working at a screen hurts, every part of life is harder. We treat the joints, muscles, and nerves driving your symptoms — and the patterns keeping them stuck.

Stiffness or aching in the neck and upper shoulders Sharp pain when turning, looking up, or looking down Headaches at the base of the skull or the temples Pain, tingling, or numbness into the shoulder or arm Trouble sleeping or finding a comfortable pillow Muscle spasms or tension across the upper shoulders

Why Your Neck Pain Persists

When symptoms linger long after an injury should have healed, deeper dysfunctions keep discomfort signals flowing.

Long Hours in One Posture

Desk work, driving, and phone use hold the neck in the same position for hours at a time.

Irritated Neck Joints

Stiff or irritated joints at the top of the neck drive both neck pain and headaches.

Weak Deep Neck Muscles

When the small support muscles of the neck get weak, the bigger surface muscles overwork and tighten up.

Whiplash & Sudden Injury

Car accidents, falls, sports impacts, and neck strain after a concussion are common causes.

Stress & Tension

Ongoing stress ramps up tension in the neck and upper shoulders, feeding pain and headaches.

Neck pain is pain, stiffness, or limited movement in the neck — often from irritated joints, tight muscles, an irritated nerve, or hours in one posture. It frequently refers pain into the head, shoulders, arms, or upper back.

Hands-On Neck Pain Care in Bozeman

Neck pain rarely stays put. It refers headaches into the temples and base of the skull, drives shoulder and arm symptoms, wrecks sleep, and makes driving and screen work miserable. At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, neck pain care happens in full 1-on-1 sessions, with hands-on treatment and strengthening every visit.

We treat desk workers with posture-related strain, drivers and trades workers with one-sided demands, whiplash after car accidents, lingering neck pain after a concussion, and chronic headaches that actually start in the neck.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Most neck pain has more than one cause — the joints, the muscles, strength and control, and stress all shape what you feel. Common drivers include:

  • Irritated neck joints — especially at the top of the neck and where the neck meets the upper back.
  • Long hours in one posture — desk work, driving, and screen time.
  • Weak deep neck muscles — which leaves the bigger surface muscles to overwork and tighten.
  • Tight, knotted muscles — across the neck, upper shoulders, and base of the skull.
  • Whiplash and sudden injury — car accidents, falls, and sports impacts.
  • Stress and tension — which ramps up neck and shoulder tightness.
  • Neck-driven headaches — often mistaken for tension headaches.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. Comprehensive evaluation (60 minutes) — your history, a posture and motion check, a nerve screen, a look at your neck strength, and a check for neck-driven headaches.
  2. Diagnosis and plan — what’s driving your symptoms and the expected timeline.
  3. Hands-on treatment that same visit — joint mobilization and soft-tissue work.
  4. Targeted exercise — neck strengthening and posture work.
  5. Home program, plus re-assessment every few visits as you improve.

Take the First Step

Neck pain that lingers tends to pile on compensations — headaches, shoulder issues, jaw tension, poor sleep. Request an appointment today — most patients are seen within the same week.

Our Treatment Approach

  • Neck Joint Mobilization — Gentle hands-on work to restore motion in the neck and ease pain.
  • Soft-Tissue Work — Hands-on release for the tight muscles in the neck, upper shoulders, and base of the skull.
  • Neck Strengthening — Building the deep support muscles of the neck — key to lasting change.
  • Posture & Workstation Retraining — Desk setup, sleep position, and habit changes for your work and life.

Everyone is great! I much prefer Roots to the typical physical therapy in a big open room. All of the folks I have worked with have been great!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physical therapy really help chronic neck pain?
Yes — it is the strongest first-line, evidence-based treatment for chronic neck pain. Hands-on manual therapy combined with neck strengthening and workstation changes outperforms medication alone. At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, every session is one-on-one with your therapist, so the hands-on work happens every visit.
What's the difference between neck pain and a headache caused by my neck?
A neck-driven headache starts in the upper neck and refers pain to the head — often one-sided, worse with neck movement, and felt as pressure at the base of the skull or behind the eye. Many “tension headaches” are actually neck-driven. We assess and treat both together.
Do I need an MRI for neck pain?
Usually no. Scans often show changes — disc bulges, mild narrowing, age-related findings — that are common in pain-free people too. A hands-on exam finds the cause in most cases. Imaging is recommended when there are warning signs, like a suspected fracture, worsening nerve problems, or a history of cancer or infection.
Is hands-on treatment safe for my neck?
Yes, when it’s done by trained clinicians after a careful screen. We check for anything that would make a technique inappropriate before we use it, and we choose gentle techniques based on what your neck tolerates.
How is neck pain after a car accident different?
Whiplash from a crash usually involves both joint and soft-tissue strain, often with concussion symptoms too. We check the neck, balance, and thinking together. See our Whiplash and Concussions pages.
How long does neck pain treatment take?
Recent, acute neck pain often settles within a few weeks. Long-standing neck pain or whiplash after a crash usually takes a couple of months. We re-assess as we go.
Do I need a referral for neck pain PT in Montana?
No — Montana is a direct-access state, so you can schedule PT without a referral. Some insurance plans require one for coverage; we verify at your benefits check.
Does insurance cover neck pain PT?
Yes. Neck pain PT is covered by most major Montana plans we accept, including Medicare — the full list is on our Insurance & Payment page. Auto insurance and workers’ comp apply for crash-related and work-related neck pain.
