A Healed Wound Isn't Always the End of It

A scar can stay tight, tender, or pulling long after the wound has closed — and quietly limit how you move. Gentle, hands-on scar therapy helps it soften and move, and restores the motion around it.

A scar that feels tight, hard, or raised A scar that's tender or overly sensitive to touch A pulling or "stuck" feeling with movement near the scar Reduced motion in a nearby joint or area A scar that catches, puckers, or restricts the skin Numbness or odd sensations around the scar

Why Scars Cause Problems

When symptoms linger long after an injury should have healed, deeper dysfunctions keep discomfort signals flowing.

After Surgery

Scars from any surgery can tighten and stick to the tissue underneath as they heal, limiting how the area moves.

After an Injury

Cuts, burns, and other wounds heal with scar tissue that can stay tight, sensitive, or restrictive.

Stuck or Adhered Scars

When a scar sticks to the layers beneath it, it can pull on nearby tissue and limit movement well after healing.

A Sensitive Scar

Some scars stay painful or hypersensitive to touch, which can make everyday clothing or contact uncomfortable.

Scar therapy is gentle, hands-on care for scars that are tight, sensitive, or restricting movement after surgery or an injury. As a scar heals, it can stick to the tissue underneath and limit motion or stay painful to touch. Scar therapy helps the scar move and feel better and restores the movement around it — as part of your physical or occupational therapy.

Gentle Scar Therapy in Bozeman

A scar is more than a mark on the skin. As a wound heals, it lays down scar tissue that can tighten, stick to the layers underneath, and stay tender to the touch — sometimes limiting how a nearby joint or area moves long after the wound has closed. Gentle, hands-on scar therapy helps that tissue soften, glide, and feel more like your own skin again.

At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, scar therapy is part of your physical or occupational therapy — delivered in full 1-on-1 sessions, with gentle hands-on care and a home program to keep the gains.

What Scar Therapy Helps With

  • Tight or stuck scars — that pull on the tissue around them and limit movement.
  • Sensitive scars — that stay tender or uncomfortable to touch or clothing.
  • Scars that limit motion — near a joint or in an area you need to move freely.
  • Scars after surgery, injury, or burns — once they’re fully healed and cleared for hands-on work.

How It Works

Scar therapy is gentle and gradual. We work on the scar itself — helping it move and soften and calming down a sensitive scar — and we treat the tissue and movement around it, since a tight scar can stiffen a whole area. Alongside the hands-on work, we restore the motion and strength the scar was limiting, and teach you gentle techniques to keep the progress going at home.

We always work within your comfort, follow your surgeon’s timeline for post-surgical scars, and coordinate with your physician when it’s helpful.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. Comprehensive evaluation (60 minutes) — your history, a look at the scar and how it moves, the motion in the area, and any sensitivity.
  2. Diagnosis and plan — what the scar is limiting and a plan to address it.
  3. Hands-on treatment that same visit — gentle scar and soft-tissue work, as appropriate for how healed the scar is.
  4. Home program — gentle scar techniques and exercises to do between visits.
  5. Re-assessment every few visits, tracking the scar’s softness, comfort, and the movement around it.

Take the First Step

If a scar is tight, tender, or getting in the way of how you move, gentle scar therapy can help. Request an appointment today — most patients are seen within the same week.

Our Treatment Approach

  • Gentle Scar Mobilization — Light hands-on techniques to help a scar move more freely and stop sticking to the tissue underneath.
  • Soft-Tissue & Myofascial Work — Hands-on work for the tight tissue around the scar to ease pulling and restore glide.
  • Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Work (IASTM) — Using smooth tools to gently work the scar tissue and help it soften and remodel over time.
  • Desensitization — Gentle, graded touch to calm a scar that's overly sensitive, so everyday contact is comfortable again.
  • Visceral Manipulation — For scars from abdominal surgery, very gentle work with the deeper connective tissue of the trunk — for restriction that lingers below the surface.
  • Motion & Strengthening — Restoring the movement and strength in the area the scar was limiting.

I saw my primary care doctor for back and leg pain. She recommended I get physical therapy. I contacted Root Therapy and wellness. I was able to get an appointment in the next week. They did an evaluation and discussed a treatment plan. My providers were Kristi, PT, and Lindsey, PTA, they both were very respectful, explained every step and made sure I understood. Thanks to them I'm now pain free. I recommend them without reservation.

I have had an incredible experience at Roots. The woman at the front desk is so helpful and kind. My PT Kristi had helped me rehab my knee and hip so that I can take my dog on hikes again and climb my stairs without pain. I feel heard and seen at my appointments. My time in the office is incredibly helpful. My home exercises are simple but very effective so I actually do them. I also work with Lindsey who is a PT assistant and she has helped my knee with cupping and other manual work. Lindsey has helped me build my strength, balance, and I’m stating to work on endurance/ cardio. I feel like I’m in safe and thoughtful hands at Roots- highly recommend!!!

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start scar therapy after surgery?
Once your incision is fully healed and your surgeon has cleared hands-on work — often a few weeks after surgery. Earlier is generally better for keeping a scar soft and mobile, but we always follow your surgeon’s timeline. We can start gentle nearby work and desensitization before we work directly on the scar.
Is it too late if my scar is old?
Often not. Even older scars can soften and move better with consistent hands-on work and exercise. Results depend on the scar, but many people notice real improvement in comfort and movement.
Does scar therapy hurt?
It shouldn’t. Scar work is gentle and stays within your comfort level. For a sensitive scar, we start very light and build up gradually as it calms down.
What kinds of scars do you treat?
Scars from surgery, injuries, and burns that are tight, tender, or limiting your movement. We fold scar work into your physical or occupational therapy, and coordinate with your surgeon or physician when needed.
Can you teach me to work on my scar at home?
Yes — home scar work is a big part of getting a good result. We teach you gentle techniques to do between visits, matched to where your scar is in healing.
Do I need a referral for scar therapy in Montana?
No — Montana is a direct-access state, so you can schedule without a referral. Post-surgical cases may need physician clearance first; some insurance plans require a referral for coverage. We verify before your first visit.
What does the treatment itself involve?
This page covers the problem — what a restrictive scar feels like and why it happens. If you want the treatment side, our scar tissue release page walks through what a session actually involves, how we choose between techniques, who delivers it, and how it is billed.
