What Is Flexibility & Range of Motion?

Flexibility refers to the ability of muscles and soft tissues to stretch, while range of motion (ROM) is the degree to which a joint can move in all directions. Together, they are crucial for everyday movements—from reaching for a toy to sitting cross-legged during story time.

Children with limited flexibility or restricted range of motion may experience discomfort, coordination challenges, or even delayed motor skills development. Causes can range from neurological conditions and developmental delays to orthopedic issues or prolonged immobility after injury.

Here are a few signs your child might benefit from range of motion therapy:

  • Stiff or limited joint movements
  • Difficulty bending, reaching, or turning their head
  • Walking on toes or an uneven gait
  • Avoiding physical play or struggling in physical education
  • Discomfort or fatigue during everyday tasks

How Occupational Therapy Supports Mobility & Growth

At Root Pediatrics, we understand that every child’s movement journey is unique. Our licensed occupational therapists begin with a thorough assessment to identify limitations and underlying causes. We then create a customised plan that might include stretching techniques, strengthening exercises, joint mobilisation, and motor planning activities—all woven into fun, age-appropriate games and routines.

We also guide parents on how to support their child’s progress at home with simple, effective activities that fit into your family’s lifestyle.

Improved flexibility and range of motion can lead to:

  • Greater independence in self-care
  • Enhanced participation in school and social activities
  • Better posture and alignment
  • Reduced risk of injury
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem
