Understanding Muscle Injuries: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

What Are Muscle Strains?

A strain is an injury to a muscle or the tissue connecting muscle to bone, known as a tendon. Strains can vary in severity from minor overstretching to partial or complete tears. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Muscle spasms
  • Limited ability to move the affected muscle

Effective Treatment Strategies

At Root Therapy & Wellness, we use the R.I.C.E. approach to treat muscle strains:

  1. Rest: Allowing the injured area to heal by avoiding activities that may aggravate the injury.
  2. Ice: Applying ice packs to reduce swelling and numb the pain.
  3. Compression: Using bandages or wraps to provide support and decrease swelling.
  4. Elevation: Keeping the injured area raised above heart level to minimize swelling.

Additionally, our healthcare professionals may recommend pain relievers, bracing, or splinting. In severe cases, such as a torn tendon, surgery might be necessary.

Key Benefits of Physical Therapy for Muscle Injuries

1. Pain Management
Physical therapy can significantly reduce pain and swelling, helping to prevent chronic discomfort and reliance on prescription medications like opioids.

2. Improved Mobility
Our physical therapy programs are designed to enhance your range of motion, flexibility, and strength, enabling you to move more confidently and safely.

3. Faster Recovery
With targeted exercises and therapies, we can accelerate your recovery process, reducing downtime and helping you return to your daily activities or athletic pursuits more quickly.

4. Avoiding Surgery
In many cases, effective physical therapy can heal injuries or alleviate pain to the extent that surgery becomes unnecessary, saving you from more invasive procedures and extended recovery times.
